Partnership for a Healthy Durham had a community listening session at South Regional Library, 4504 S. Alston Ave. in Durham from 6 to 7:30pm. Attending on behalf of the Coalition was Cheryl Lloyd, PhD.
September 7th
Find a Kid Focus Group was held at the Coalition at 4pm. The purpose was to determine how much children understand the importance of eating properly, exercising and managing their weight. Moderating the focus group was Sonia Steele, Dietician and Contractor. Others attending on behalf of the Coalition were Ross Brothers, BS; Sharon Baker, JD.
September 8th – 9th
Faith Institute on Homelessness and Poverty presented in partnership with the Coalition to End Homelessness in Durham, Durham Congregation In Action, Durham Cares and Union Baptist Church: Pre-Conference Tours of Agencies and Socials were held on Sept 8th from 3:30pm at the Main Branch of Durham County Library; Workshops were held on Sept 9th from 8:45 am to 3:45pm at Union Baptist Church. Representing the Coalition was Cheryl Lloyd, PhD.
September 10th
The NC Grand Chapter Order of the Eastern Star awarded the Community Health Coalition $1000.00 for its work in Hypertension and Heart Disease Awareness at its Charity and Awards Luncheon at 1:30pm at the MC Benton Convention Center in Winston Salem, NC. Carmelita Spicer, MEd accepted this award on behalf of the Coalition.
The Community Health Coalition participated in a Health Fair at Mt. Gilead Baptist Church in Durham from 11am to 2pm. Marion Miles, RN; Lois Parker, Anya Green-Odlum, PA; and others from the Coalition provided glucose screenings, blood pressure checks and encouraged attendees to sign up for FREE mammograms and a Diabetes Support Group (DIP) Research Project.
September 12th
Eat Smart, Move More Seniors Exercise and Screening program was held at CAARE through Project UPLIFT funding at the Durham Housing Authority Senior Living Centers. Representing the Coalition were Sharon Elliott-Bynum, RN, PhD and Kay Sullivan and Telease Coleman.
September 13th
The African-American Health Improvement Partnership, Research Leadership Committee met at NC Mutual in room 335 at 10:00 – 11:30am. Member representing the Community Health Coalition, Inc: Elaine Hart-Brothers, MD; Sharon Elliott-Bynum, PhD. Other representatives: Pamela Duncan, Sherman James, Lawrence Muhlbaler, Rupal Patel, Andrea McMillon and Mina Silberberg.
The Church Marketing Committee headed by Atty. Tara Nichols, a Coalition board member, met at the Coalition on Tuesday at 6pm to work on 1)agenda for a Brunch/Breakfast on October 11th for ministers of Durham. The objective for this gathering is to get health and wellness issues as priorities in church ministers. Attending the meeting were Carmelita Spicer, MEd; Sharon Baker, JD; Tara Nichols, Esquire; Kim Drumgo, MBA & Coalition board member; Marion Miles, RN; Brenda Jamerson, PharmD & Coalition board member.
September 14th
Dr. Joseph Betancourt, Director of The Disparities Solutions Center and Senior Scientist at the Institute for Health Policy at Massachusetts General Hospital, gave a Merck sponsored talk to local health professionals about health disparities. The event was at 6:30pm at Cafe Parizade in Durham. The Durham Academy members (DAMDP) attended. Representing the Coalition was Elaine Hart-Brothers, MD.
September 17th
Lincoln Health Center held a Prostate Cancer Screening from 8am to 12 noon. Participating on behalf of the Coalition was Marion Miles, RN.
Morreene Road Community Housing Project Saturday Health Clinic was held. The Community Health Coalition, medical doctors and health professionals provided food, consultation and administered blood pressure, glucose and weight checks to residents from 9am to 2pm. Representing the Coalition were Cedric Bright, MD and Vivian Jackson, RN. Dr. Dolly Penn, a volunteer, served as precept at Morreene Road.
September 18th
The Community Health Coalition participated in a Block Party at Deliverance Church on Liberty Street from 1 to 4pm. Marion Miles, RN; Lois Parker; Ross Brothers; Beryl Riley; from the Coalition provided glucose screenings, blood pressure checks and encouraged attendees to sign up for FREE mammograms and a Diabetes Support Group (DIP) Research Project.
September 19th
CHC emailed and mailed via postal service approximately 300 Health Tips on Prostate Cancer Awareness to churches, organizations, doctors and the media for distribution to congregation, members, patients and subscribers, respectively. The Health Tip was written by Carmelita Spicer, MEd, in collaboration with Arnett Coleman, MD. The Health Tip was edited & graphically designed by Carmelita Spicer, MEd. & Communications Specialist. Marion Miles, RN from the Coalition manages the Healthy Sunday program. Churches are encouraged to distribute the health tip to the congregation and discuss the health topic on the 4th, Sunday. Churches are also encouraged to upload the information to their website.
September 20th

Members representing the Community Health Coalition, Inc: Elaine Hart-Brothers, MD, MPH, FACP and Sharon Elliott-Bynum, PhD. Other representatives: Pamela Duncan, Sherman James, Lawrence Muhlbaler, Rupal Patel and Mina Silberberg.
Blood Pressure Committee met on the B-PEP (Blood Pressure Education Program) at 5:30pm at the Coalition. The agenda for this meeting was to re-commit to1) a second 12 week blood pressure education program for HBP participants 2) review commitment of leaders of Durham on managing their blood pressure and hypertension, and 3) review/understand current State of NC policy on insurance coverage for BP machines & cuffs, and work to change if necessary. Attending were: Carmelita Spicer, MEd & Program Director; Bertha Williams, MSN & Program Instructor; Sherwood E. Smith, Insurance Agent; Yolanda Ford, Durham Public School Educator; Carolyn Clay, RN from Duke; James Amos, Communication Specialist from Duke; Gloria Chambers from NCCU; Pamela Bivens, Contractor; and Elaine Hart-Brothers, MD and advisor.

September 25th
The Community Health Coalition participated in the American Heart Association (AHA) 2011 - 2012 Triangle Heart Walk & Fundraiser from 12noon to 4pm at RBC in Raleigh, NC. The Walk started and finished at the RBC Center. There were three Wellness Communities that focus on the following topics: Create Hope, Inspire Change, and Celebrate Success. Each community was distinguished by the colors red, green, and blue. Walking on behalf of the Coalition were Pamela Bivens, Terry Morris, Lottie and Kayla Barnes, Ross Brothers, Elaine Hart-Brothers, MD.
September 27th

September 29th
The Community Health Coalition held its Check It, Change It Blood Pressure Monitoring Site training session at 10am at the Coalition. The training was conducted by Katrina Damon, PhD. The training included a heart 360 demonstration, blood pressure screenings, understanding how the remote blood pressure monitoring station operates, and establishing service hours of operation, security and marketing support. There were a total of 16 people comprised of contractors, volunteers and staff from the Coalition who attended the training. The meeting was managed by Marion Miles, RN from the Coalition.
