OCTOBER 2011 ACTIVITY SUMMARIES

October 4th
The African-American Health Improvement Partnership, Research Leadership Committee met at NC Mutual in room 335 at 10:00 – 11:30am. Members representing the Community Health Coalition, Inc: Elaine Hart-Brothers, MD; Sharon Elliott-Bynum, PhD. Other representatives: Pamela Duncan, Sherman James, Lawrence Muhlbaler, Rupal Patel, Andrea McMillon and Mina Silberberg.

Blood Pressure Committee (B-PEP) met at 5:30pm at the Coalition to re-commit to1) a second 12 week blood pressure education program for HBP participants 2) review commitment of leaders of Durham on managing their blood pressure and hypertension, and 3) review/understand current State of NC policy on insurance coverage for BP machines & cuffs. Members Present: Carmelita Spicer, MEd & Program Director; Bertha Williams, MSN & Program Instructor; Sherwood E. Smith, Insurance Agent; Yolanda Ford, Durham Public School Educator; Carolyn Clay, RN from Duke; James Amos, Communication Specialist from Duke; Pamela Bivens, Contractor.

The LINKS health committee of the Durham Chapter met at the Community Health Coalition from 6:30 to 7:30pm to discuss health initiatives for the Durham community. Elaine Hart-Brothers, MD & Board President of the Coalition is chair of the Durham Chapter Links Health Committee.

October 8th
The Community Health Coalition participated in a Health Fair at Greater St. Paul in Durham from 8:30am to 12noon. Marion Miles, RN and Lois Parker from the Coalition provided glucose screenings, blood pressure checks and encouraged attendees to sign up for FREE mammograms and a Diabetes Support Group (DIP) Research Project.

October 10th
Eat Smart, Move More Seniors Exercise and Screening program was held at CAARE through Project UPLIFT funding at the Durham Housing Authority Senior Living Centers. Representing the Coalition were Sharon Elliott-Bynum, RN, PhD and Kay Sullivan and Telease Coleman.

October 11th
The Community Health Coalition held its First Annual Faith Summit for a Healthier Durham for local ministers at 9am at the Coalition office in Durham. The objective for this gathering was to promote health and wellness issues as priorities in church ministers. A full breakfast was served. This event was planned and executed by the Community Health Coalition’s board members and chaired by board member, Attorney Tara Nichols.

October 13th
The Community Health Coalition participated in a Live for Life health fair at Durham Regional Hospital from 10am to 3pm. Marion Miles, RN; Lois Parker; Contractor from the Coalition provided blood pressure checks and encouraged attendees to sign up for FREE mammograms and for a Diabetes Support Group (DIP) Research Project.

October 14th
Lincoln Community Health Center invited the public to a FREE breast health workshop and spa day from 9am to 2pm to learn about breast health, stress reduction, nutrition, exercise, symptom management and surviving breast cancer. FREE facials, manicures, massages, breakfast and lunch were provided. Marion Miles, RN from the Coalition assisted Lincoln with this workshop.

October 15th
Morreene Road Community Housing Project Saturday Health Clinic was held. The Community Health Coalition, medical doctors and health professionals provided food, consultation and administered blood pressure, glucose and weight checks to residents from 9am to 2pm. Representing the Coalition were Cedric Bright, MD and Vivian Jackson, RN.

The Community Health Coalition participated in a Sisterhood Network social/health fair at Greater St. Paul Baptist Church from 8 to 10pm. Marion Miles, RN; Lois Parker; Contractor from the Coalition provided blood pressure checks and encouraged attendees to sign up for FREE mammograms and for a Diabetes Support Group (DIP) Research Project.

October 17th
CHC emailed and mailed via postal service approximately 300 Health Tips on Breast Cancer Awareness to churches, organizations, doctors and the media for distribution to congregation, members, patients and subscribers, respectively. The Health Tip was written by Carmelita Spicer, MEd, in collaboration with Stacey Heath, MD from the Harris & Smith OB/GYN practice in Durham. The Health Tip was edited & graphically designed by Carmelita Spicer, MEd. Marion Miles, RN from the Coalition manages the Healthy Sunday program. Churches are encouraged to distribute the health tip to the congregation and discuss the health topic on the 4th, Sunday. Churches are also encouraged to upload the information to their website.

October 18th
The African-American Health Improvement Partnership, CAB, met at Lyons Park in Durham at 5:30pm. Members representing the Community Health Coalition, Inc: Elaine Hart-Brothers, MD, MPH, FACP and Sharon Elliott-Bynum, PhD. Other representatives: Pamela Duncan, Sherman James, Lawrence Muhlbaler, Rupal Patel and Mina Silberberg.

October 22nd

October 23rd
The Community Health Coalition participated in a Pink Health Sunday to promote breast health awareness and prevention at 1st First Calvary Baptist Church, Morehead Baptist Church, Ebenezer Baptist Church in Durham, and Siloam Baptist in Person County by providing health education packets to the congregations.

October 25th

October 27th
The Community Health Coalition held its Annual Fall Board Meeting at Durham Regional Hospital in the Watts Board Room from 6pm to 8pm. Attending board members: Elaine Hart-Brothers, MD & Board President; Tara Nichols, Esquire; Howard Fitts, EdD; Louise Sims, Ret. LPN; Alphonza Nichols, Retired; Carolyn Clay, MBA; Rev. Gussie, Thompson; James Amos, BS; new member – Tamera Coyne-Beasley, MD. Attending guests: Mrs. Alphonza Nochols; Stacy Heath, MD; Wanda Thompson, PA, PhD; Cheryl Lloyd, PhD; and staff.

October 29th
The Community Health Coalition participated in a Health Fair at Merrick Moore Elementary School for the Doers of the Word Church in Durham from10:30am to 1:30pm. Marion Miles, RN and Lois Parker from the Coalition, and Brenda Jamerson, PharmD & a Coalition board member provided glucose screenings, blood pressure checks and encouraged attendees to sign up for FREE mammograms and a Diabetes Support Group (DIP) Research Project.
