Free Health Fair Set at CAARE
August 20, 2011

DURHAM -- A free health fair to address ethnic and racial disparities will be held from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Aug. 20 at the CAARE Inc. building, 214 Broadway St.

It is presented by the The Health Committee of the Durham Committee on the Affairs of Black People in collaboration with CAARE, Inc., North Carolina Leadership Conference Inc., Community Health Coalition and the Check It Change It (The Durham Blood Pressure Challenge program).

The event will include health care screenings, prevention tips, health education materials and definitive approaches to improve your health.

Highlights include a free dental clinic, massage therapy to relieve stress and a professional dance fitness instructor to address the importance of exercise.

Preventive classes will include exercise demonstrations, free nutrition classes and activities for all ages.

Participants will be provided opportunities for follow-up cancer test screening for prostate cancer, colorectal cancer, cervical cancer and breast cancer. Educational sessions will cover dental health, eye care, nutrition and many other possible health challenges.

Finally, there will be cooking classes, dance classes to encourage movement and discussion of mental health conditions. Testing will include HIV/AIDS, body mass index, glucose screening for diabetes, blood pressure, glaucoma and cholesterol screening.

THE AUXILIARY TO THE DURHAM ACADEMY OF MEDICINE, DENTISTRY& PHARMACY held its 18th Annual Legacy Luncheon on Saturday, August 20, 2011 at 12:00 Noon at the Hilton Durham Hotel, 3800 Hillsborough Road in Durham, NC

The featured Speaker was Cedric M. Bright, MD, the 112th President of the National Medical Association.  The Auxiliary also honored Sharon Elliott-Bynum, PhD and President of CAARE, Inc. and Joyce Clayton Nichols, PA.

Proceeds from the 18th Annual Legacy Luncheon benefitted two non-profits:  The Community Health Coalition, Inc.  and CAARE, Inc – both from Durham, NC.
