The African-American Health Improvement Partnership, Research Leadership Committee met at NC Mutual in room 335 at 12:30 – 2:00pm. Carmelita Spicer, MEd & Communications Specialist and Sharon Baker, JD & Grant Director of the Community Health Coalition attended a three day REACH/SUCCEED workshop which focused on “The Reality of Community Capacity Building: Strategies to Address Cancer Disparities” in Atlanta, GA. The workshop was hosted by the Morehouse School of Medicine Prevention Research Center and made possible through a grant from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).
May 10th
Eat Smart, Move More Seniors Exercise and Screening program was held at CAARE through Project UPLIFT funding at the Durham Housing Authority Senior Living Centers. Representing the Coalition were Sharon Elliott-Bynum, RN, PhD and Kay Sullivan.

The Community Health Coalition’s Annual Spring Board Meeting was held at 6:30pm at 1901 Hillandale Road in Durham. There were 12 members present. Elaine Hart-Brothers, MD, Board President and Edwards Clemons, DDS and Board Vice President presided over the meeting.

Sharon Baker, JD and Janice Johnson, Contractor for the Community Health Coalition met with Kenisha Bethea, MPH, CHES and Community Grants and Outreach Manager from Susan G. Komen, NC Triangle Affiliate to review progress on the Sisterhood Project IV grant.

Blood Pressure Committee met at the Ivy Community Center at 5:30pm. The agenda for this meeting was to finalize May’s Community Meeting and Health Fair. May 14th
The Community Health Coalition exhibited at the Bimbe’ Cultural Arts Festival, hosted by Durham Parks & Recreation from 12noon to 3pm at CCB Plaza, downtown Durham. The Coalition distributed health education materials, signed-up women for FREE mammograms and for the diabetes II program (DIP). Representing the Coalition at the Festival were Marion Miles, RN; Carmelita Spicer, MEd; Janice Johnson, contractor; Lois Parker; Valarie Zollicoffer; Sonia Steele, Ross Brothers, James Tabron; Wayne Daye.
May 15th
CHC emailed and mailed via postal service approximately 300 Health Tips on Stroke Awareness and Prevention to churches, organizations, doctors and the media for distribution to congregation, members, patients and subscribers, respectively. The Health Tip was written by Cedric Bright, MD an Internist at the Veteran Administration Hospital, in collaboration with Carmelita Spicer. The Health Tip was edited & graphically designed by Carmelita Spicer, MEd. & Communications Specialist. Marion Miles, RN from the Coalition managed the Healthy Sunday program. Churches were encouraged to distribute the health tip to the congregation and discuss the health topic on the 4th, Sunday. Churches were also encouraged to upload the information to their website.

Cheryl Lloyd, PhD & contractor for the Community Health Coalition and Rebecca Brunbach from the GSK Pulse Volunteer Partnership Program met at the Coalition office @ 12noon to discuss opportunities for the employees of GSK to volunteer their time with the Coalition for a year.
May 19th
The Community Health Coalition held its Annual Spring Community Dinner Meeting & Health Fair at the Ivy Community Center at 4222 Fayetteville Rd in Durham from 5 to 9pm.
Exhibits opened at 5pm. The dinner started at 7pm. This year’s theme was “Leading the Way to Better Health by Taking the Blood Pressure Challenge” The Durham Community key leaders; William ‘Bill’ Bell, Mayor of City of Durham; HM ‘Mickey’ Michaux, Jr., NC House Representative; Rev. Michael Page, Durham County Commissioner Chair; Pastor Fredrick Davis, Pastor of First Calvary Baptist Church; Ms. Gayle Harris, Director of Durham County Health Department; and Rev. William Everett, President of the Interdenominational Ministerial Alliance of Durham attended and publicly took a pledge to take better care of their health and check their blood pressure regularly.

The Community Health Coalition, medical doctors and health professionals provided food, consultation and administered blood pressure, glucose and weight checks to residents from 9am to 2pm. Representing the Coalition were Cedric Bright, MD and Vivian Jackson, RN.
