May 3rd
The African-American Health Improvement Partnership, Research Leadership Committee met at NC Mutual in room 335 at 12:30 – 2:00pm. Members representing the Community Health Coalition, Inc: Elaine Hart-Brothers, MD, MPH, FACP and Sharon Elliott-Bynum, PhD. Other representatives: Pamela Duncan, Sherman James, Lawrence Muhlbaler, Rupal Patel and Mina Silberberg.

May 10th
Eat Smart, Move More Seniors Exercise and Screening program was held at CAARE through Project UPLIFT funding at the Durham Housing Authority Senior Living Centers. Representing the Coalition were Sharon Elliott-Bynum, RN, PhD and Kay Sullivan.

The African-American Health Improvement Partnership, Research Leadership Committee met at NC Mutual in room 335 at 10:00 – 11:30am. Member representing the Community Health Coalition, Inc: Sharon Elliott-Bynum, PhD. Other representatives: Pamela Duncan, Sherman James, Lawrence Muhlbaler, Rupal Patel, Andrea McMillon and Mina Silberberg.

The Community Health Coalition’s Annual Spring Board Meeting will be held at 6:30pm at 1901 Hillandale Road in Durham. The board consists of 13 members with Elaine Hart-Brothers, MD is Board President and Edwards Clemons, DDS is Vice President.

May 12th
Blood Pressure Committee met on the B-PEP (Blood Pressure Education Program). The agenda for this meeting was to work on planning May’s Community Meeting and Health Fair. Active committee members: Carmelita Spicer, MEd & Program Director; Rick Gray, Clinical Research Associate with Duke & Committee Facilitator; Sherwood E. Smith, Insurance Agent; Yolanda Ford, Durham Public School Educator; James Amos, CHC Board Member & Program Coordinator; Bertha Williams, MSN; Elaine Hart-Brothers, MD and advisor.

May 14th
The Community Health Coalition will exhibit at the Bimbe’ Cultural Arts Festival from 12noon to 8pm at CCB Plaza, downtown Durham. The Coalition will be distributing health education materials, signing-up women for FREE mammograms and for the diabetes II program (DIP). Representing the Coalition at the Festival will be Marion Miles, RN; Lottie Barnes, Volunteer; Carmelita Spicer, MEd;

May 15th
CHC will email and mail via postal service approximately 300 Health Tips on Stroke Awareness and Prevention to churches, organizations, doctors and the media for distribution to congregation, members, patients and subscribers, respectively. The Health Tip is written by Cedric Bright, MD an Internist at the Veteran Administration Hospital, in collaboration with Carmelita Spicer. The Health Tip is edited & graphically designed by Carmelita Spicer, MEd. & Communications Specialist. Marion Miles, RN from the Coalition manages the Healthy Sunday program. Churches are encouraged to distribute the health tip to the congregation and discuss the health topic on the 4th, Sunday. Churches are also encouraged to upload the information to their website.

May 17th
The African-American Health Improvement Partnership, CAB, met at Lyons Park in Durham at 5:30pm. Members representing the Community Health Coalition, Inc: Elaine Hart-Brothers, MD, MPH, FACP and Sharon Elliott-Bynum, PhD. Other representatives: Pamela Duncan, Sherman James, Lawrence Muhlbaler, Rupal Patel and Mina Silberberg.

May 19th
The Community Health Coalition will hold its Annual Spring Community Dinner Meeting & Health Fair at the Ivy Community Center at 4222 Fayetteville Rd in Durham from 5 to 9pm.
Exhibits will be opened at 5pm. The dinner starts at 7pm. This year’s theme is “Leading the Way to Better Health by Taking the Blood Pressure Challenge” The Durham Community key leaders; such as the Mayor and Superintendent of Schools have agreed to attend and publicly take a pledge to take better care of their health and check their blood pressure regularly.

May 21st
Moreene Road Community Housing Project Saturday Health Clinic was held. The Community Health Coalition, medical doctors and health professionals provided food, consultation and administer blood pressure, glucose and weight checks to residents from 9am to 2pm. Representing the Coalition were Cedric Bright, MD and Vivian Jackson, RN.

May 24th

May 28th
Morning Glory Community Housing Project Saturday Health Clinic was held. The Community Health Coalition, medical doctors and health professionals provided food, consultation and administered blood pressure, glucose and weight checks to residents from 9am to 2pm. Representing the Coalition were Cedric Bright, MD and Vivian Jackson, RN.

May 31st
