March 2011 ACTIVITY SUMMARIES

March 1st
The African-American Health Improvement Partnership, Research Leadership Committee met at NC Mutual in room 335 at 12:30 – 2:00pm. Member representing the Community Health Coalition, Inc: Sharon Elliott-Bynum, PhD. Other representatives: Pamela Duncan, Sherman James, Lawrence Muhlbaler, Rupal Patel and Mina Silberberg.

March 2nd
Community Health Coalition, Inc. in Partnership with Rex Hospital Mobile Mammography Unit offered FREE Mammograms in Phoenix Square Parking Area 800 Block on Fayetteville St. in Durham, NC from 9am – 3pm on Wednesday, March 2, 2011. A total of 25 screenings were offered to African American women; age 40+ who are underserved, uninsured and underinsured or who have a history of breast cancer in their family. Health related educational materials were also distributed. Representing the Coalition were Marion Miles, RN; Mary Pointer, RN; Janice Johnson, project coordinator; Lois Parker, lay health advisor.

March 4th – 12th
Durham observed the National Week of Prayer for the Healing of AIDS. Confidential HIV/AIDS testing was available by the Durham Health Department. The events were free and opened to the public. The week events were sponsored by the Durham Faith Community on HIV/AIDS. Representing the Coalition at this event was Janice Johnson, Community Advocate.

March 5th
The Community Health Coalition in its efforts to promote physical activity and exercise ran in the Great Human 5K Race. The Run supported the Triangle non-profits. Representing the Coalition was Dr. Jeremy Woods.

March 8th
Eat Smart, Move More Seniors Exercise and Screening program was held at CAARE through Project UPLIFT funding at the Durham Housing Authority Senior Living Centers. Representing the Coalition were Sharon Elliott-Bynum, RN, PhD, Telease Coleman, Exercise Instructor and Kay Sullivan, Dance Instructor.

March 10th
Blood Pressure Committee met on the B-PEP (Blood Pressure Education Program). The agenda for this meeting was to work on 1) securing funding sources for hand held monitors, 2) developing a city-wide campaign to bring focus on managing high blood pressure and hypertension in the city of Durham, and 3) planning May’s Community Meeting and Health Fair. Active committee members: Carmelita Spicer, MEd & Program Director; Gloria Chambers, Instructor from NCCU; Rick Gray, Clinical Research Associate with Duke & Committee Facilitator; Sherwood E. Smith, Insurance Agent; Yolanda Ford, Durham Public School Educator; James Amos, Communication Specialist at Durham Regional Hospital; Carolyn Clay, RN; Elaine Hart-Brothers, MD and advisor.

March 14th
The American Cancer Society held a meeting at Durham Regional Hospital from 1 – 5pm to discuss the possibility of setting up an educational center on cancer awareness, prevention in the hospital. Representing the Coalition was Marion Miles, RN.

March 15th
The African-American Health Improvement Partnership, CAB, met at Lyons Park in Durham at 5:30pm. Members representing the Community Health Coalition, Inc: Elaine Hart-Brothers, MD, MPH, FACP and Sharon Elliott-Bynum, PhD. Other representatives: Pamela Duncan, Sherman James, Lawrence Muhlbaler, Rupal Patel and Mina Silberberg.

March 18th
The Susan G. Komen hosted its grantee luncheon at the Renaissance Hotel in Raleigh, NC from 11am to 3pm. Attending on behalf of the Coalition were Sharon Baker, JD & Project Director; Janice Johnson, Case Manager; Carmelita Spicer, Administrator & Communication Specialist.

March 19th
Moreene Road Community Housing Project Saturday Health Clinic was held. The Community Health Coalition, medical doctors and health professionals provided food, consultation and administered blood pressure, glucose and weight checks to residents from 9am to 2pm. Representing the Coalition were Cedric Bright, MD and Vivian Jackson, RN.

March 21st
CHC emailed and mailed via postal service approximately 300 Health Tips on Awareness to churches, organizations, doctors and the media for distribution to congregation, members, patients and subscribers, respectively. The Health Tip was written by Edward Clemons, DDS, General Dentistry in Durham and, Veronica Ray, MD, Internal Medicine at Lincoln Community Health Center. The Health Tip was edited & graphically designed by Carmelita Spicer, MEd. & Communications Specialist. Marion Miles, RN from the Coalition managed the Healthy Sunday program. Churches were encouraged to discuss on the 4th, Sunday.

March 22nd

March 25th
The Community Health Coalition its efforts to promote physical activity and exercise ran in the Cary Distance Festival-10K Run. The event supported the Cary Rotary Club. Representing the Coalition was Dr. Jeremy Woods.

March 26th
Morning Glory Community Housing Project Saturday Health Clinic was held. March 28th
CDC Division of Cancer Prevention and Control in partnership with SESRCD Program sponsored a FREE workshop on Reducing Cancer Disparities & Promoting Health Equity (among socioeconomically disadvantaged populations) from 9am to 4pm. The event was held at the NC Division of Public Health, Cardinal Meeting Room, 1st floor at 5605 Six Forks Rd. (Bldg. 3) in Raleigh. Representing the Coalition at this workshop were Sharon Baker, JD and Carmelita Spicer, MEd.

March 29th
