JUNE 2011 ACTIVITY SUMMARIES

June1st
Elaine Hart-Brothers, MD & Board President of the Community Health Coalition attended the Chancellor’s Community Health Advisory Board meeting from 6 to 8pm at the Washington Duke Inn. Gayle Harris, Director of Durham County Health Department presented a report on Community Assessment (Marion Miles and Mary Pointer, RNs from Community Health Coalition worked on this assessment). Victor J. Dzau is Chancellor of Health Affairs of the Duke University Health System. Elaine Hart-Brothers serves as one of his advisor on the board.

June 5th
The Community Health Coalition, Inc participated in "Walk A Mile With A Child" Saturday from 8:00 a.m. – 12noon at Hillside High School Track. The walk sponsored by the Durham Academy of Medicine, Dentistry, and Pharmacy (Durham-Chapel Hill National Medical Association (NMA)) aimed to address the issue of childhood obesity that is plaguing our community. Walking on behalf of CHC were Lottie Barnes, Pamela Bivens, Angus Fubara, Noel Haroon, Linda Hester, Irene Jackson, Vivian Jackson, Jeffrey Mason, Joan Packenham, Jennifer Paris, Mary Pointer, Kathy Ramsey, Betty Reed.

June 7th
Brenda Jamerson, PharmD from Campbell University, Elaine Hart-Brothers, MD, and Carmelita Spicer, MEd of the Community Health Coalition met with Sue Schneider, Program Manager of Durham Health Innovations Program (made possible from planning grants by Duke Health Systems) at 11:30am at the Coalition office to discuss CHC’s future involvement in the grant programs. Specifically discussion will evolve around the four (4) of the ten (10) planning grants that the Community Health Coalition worked on in 2009/10: Cardiovascular Improvement Project (VIP); Seniors Healthy-in-Place (HIP); Obesity; and Maternal Child Care. Also attending the meeting were Brenda Jamerson, PharmD & Board Member of CHC, Sharon Baker, JD from CHC and community representatives from East and Southwest Durham.

The African-American Health Improvement Partnership, Research Leadership Committee met at NC Mutual in room 335 at 12:30 – 2:00pm. Members representing the Community Health Coalition, Inc: Elaine Hart-Brothers, MD, MPH, FACP and Sharon Elliott-Bynum, PhD. Other representatives: Pamela Duncan, Sherman James, Lawrence Muhlbaler, Rupal Patel and Mina Silberberg.

June 11th
Susan G. Komen NC Triangle Affiliate held its Race for the Cure at Meredith College in Raleigh. Activities will start at 7:00am. Representing the Coalition were Carmelita Spicer, MEd; Janice Johnson, Community Advocate and Sonia Steele, Volunteer.

June 14th Eat Smart, Move More Seniors Exercise and Screening program were held at CAARE through Project UPLIFT funding at the Durham Housing Authority Senior Living Centers. Representing the Coalition were Sharon Elliott-Bynum, RN, PhD and Kay Sullivan and Telease Coleman.

The African-American Health Improvement Partnership, Research Leadership Committee met at NC Mutual in room 335 at 10:00 – 11:30am. Members representing the Community Health Coalition, Inc: Elaine Hart-Brothers, MD and Sharon Elliott-Bynum, PhD. Other representatives: Pamela Duncan, Sherman James, Lawrence Muhlbaler, Rupal Patel, Andrea McMillon and Mina Silberberg.

June 16th – 18th
Old North State Medical Society Annual Meeting and Scientific Convention were held at the Grandover Convention Center in Greensboro, NC. The 124th Annual Meeting and Scientific Assembly honored Cedric Bright, MD, President-elect of the National Medical Association and included a presentation by U.S. Region IV Director, Mr. Anton Gunn from the Department of Health and Human Services. Mr. Gunn addressed the administration's work on behalf of saving independent, small medical practices. On Thursday, Carmelita Spicer, MEd from the Coalition and James Amos, CHC Board Member spoke to the group on strategies for Preservation/Prevention: Reducing Behavioral Risks for Heart Disease and Stroke. Marion Miles, RN also attended this session. Elaine Hart-Brothers, MD and George Brothers, MD attended the session on Saturday.

June 18th
Morreene Road Community Housing Project Saturday Health Clinic was held. The Community Health Coalition, medical doctors and health professionals provided food, consultation and administered blood pressure, glucose and weight checks to residents from 9am to 2pm. Representing the Coalition was Vivian Jackson, RN.

June 20th
CHC emailed and mailed via postal service approximately 300 Health Tips on Proper Use of Medication to churches, organizations, doctors and the media for distribution to congregation, members, patients and subscribers, respectively. The Health Tip was written by Brenda Jamerson, PharmD. The Health Tip was edited & graphically designed by Carmelita Spicer, MEd. & Communications Specialist. Marion Miles, RN from the Coalition manages the Healthy Sunday program. Churches were encouraged to distribute the health tip to the congregation and discuss the health topic on the 4th, Sunday. Churches were also encouraged to upload the information to their website.

June 21st
The African-American Health Improvement Partnership, CAB, met at Lyons Park in Durham at 5:30pm. Members representing the Community Health Coalition, Inc: Elaine Hart-Brothers, MD, MPH, FACP and Sharon Elliott-Bynum, PhD. Other representatives: Pamela Duncan, Sherman James, Lawrence Muhlbaler, Rupal Patel and Mina Silberberg.

June 25th

100 Black Men – Triangle Chapter awarded Elaine Hart-Brothers, MD & co-founder of the Community Health Coalition for her outstanding contributions to community health and for years of working to eradicate health disparities among African Americans in the Durham Community. The award was presented to her at the Sheraton Hotel in RTP.

June 28th
