The African-American Health Improvement Partnership, Research Leadership Committee met at NC Mutual in room 335 at 12:30 – 2pm. Member representing the Community Health Coalition, Inc: Sharon Elliott-Bynum, PhD. Other representatives: Pamela Duncan, Sherman James, Lawrence Muhlbaler, Rupal Patel and Mina Silberberg.
January 15th
Moreene Road Community Housing Project Saturday Health Clinic was held. The Community Health Coalition, medical doctors and health professionals provided food, consultation and administered blood pressure, glucose and weight checks to residents from 9am to 2pm. Representing the Coalition were Cedric Bright, MD and Vivian Jackson, RN.
January 18th
CHC emailed and mailed via postal service approximately 300 Health Tips on Exercise and Fitness to churches, organizations, doctors and the media for distribution to congregation, members, patients and subscribers, respectively. The Health Tip was written by George Brothers, Jr., MD, a Rheumatologist at Chapel Hill Internal Medicine, and edited & graphically designed by Carmelita Spicer, MEd. & Communications Specialist. Marion Miles, RN from the Coalition manages the Healthy Sunday program. Churches were encouraged to discuss on the 4th Sunday.
National Alliance of Mental Illness (NAMI) held a series of 12 weekly classes to help family members understand and support their ill relatives while maintaining their won well being. The Family-to-Family Education Program is FREE to participants. The Durham class started January 18, 2011 and will run to April 12, 2011 from 7 to 9:30pm. The Community Health Coalition held its second Strategic Planning Session on Healthy People 2020 at 6:00pm at the Coalition office. The meeting was facilitated by Cheryl Lloyd, MEd. and attended by eighteen community leaders, volunteers and staff.
January 21st
Duke University SNMA presented its 18th Annual MLK Jr. Banquet at the Washington Duke Inn & Golf Club at 7pm. Keynote speaker was Sherman James, PhD from the Sanford School of Public Policy.

The Community Health Coalition along with the Durham County Health Depart, Lincoln Community, CAARE and Senior Care Center participated in a Health Fair at Northside Baptist Church in Durham from 10am to 12noon. Marion Miles, RN and others from the Coalition provided glucose screenings, blood pressure checks and encouraged attendees to sign up for FREE mammograms and a Diabetes Support Group (DIP) Research Project.
