FEBRUARY 2011 ACTIVITY SUMMARIES

February 1st
The Childhood Obesity Program funded by the LINKS, Inc., Durham Chapter met with approximately 20 middle school students at the Coalition from 4:00 to 7:00pm. The program was designed to encourage the students to eat healthy and exercise. Children came from neighborhood churches and “Find a Kid “program under the auspices of Coach Spence. Representing the coalition were Sharon Baker, JD and director; Sonia Steele, Registered Dietician and Instructor; Marion Miles, RN; Ross Brothers and Coach Spence, Facilitators.

February 2nd
The African-American Health Improvement Partnership, Research Leadership Committee met at NC Mutual in room 335 at 12:30 – 2:00pm. Member representing the Community Health Coalition, Inc: Sharon Elliott-Bynum, PhD. Other representatives: Pamela Duncan, Sherman James, Lawrence Muhlbaler, Rupal Patel, Andrea McMillon and Mina Silberberg.

February 3rd
The LINKS Health Committee of the Durham Chapter met to discuss the health agenda for the 2011 year. Attending on behalf of the Coalition was Elaine Hart-Brothers, MD. Others attending were Avis Artis, MD; Sandra Olden; Linda Burton; Tiffany Williams, Jasmine Smith.

February 8th
Eat Smart, Move More Seniors Exercise and Screening program was held at CAARE through Project UPLIFT funding at the Durham Housing Authority Senior Living Centers. Representing the Coalition were Sharon Elliott-Bynum, RN, PhD and Kay Sullivan, dance instructor.

February 9th

Member representing the Community Health Coalition, Inc: Sharon Elliott-Bynum, PhD. Other representatives: Pamela Duncan, Sherman James, Lawrence Muhlbaler, Rupal Patel, Andrea McMillon and Mina Silberberg.

February 10th
Cheryl Lloyd, PhD attended the Access to Care (Partnership for Healthy Durham Subcommittee) meeting on behalf of the Community Health Coalition. Discussion included an update on the State’s effort to move medical practices to electronic health records. Senior PharmAssist (Gina Upchurch) would like to explore opportunities to work more closely with the Coalition.

Blood Pressure Committee resumed its efforts to help eradicate hypertension/high blood pressure in the Durham Community. They met on the B-PEP (Blood Pressure Education Program). The agenda for this meeting was to work on securing funding sources for hand held monitors and develop a city-wide campaign to bring focus on managing high blood pressure and hypertension in the city of Durham. Active committee members: Carmelita Spicer, MEd & Program Director; Lottie Barnes, MPH, CHES from Duke; Rick Gray, Clinical Research Associate with Duke & Committee Facilitator; Sherwood E. Smith, Insurance Agent; Yolanda Ford, Durham Public School Educator; Elaine Hart-Brothers, MD and advisor.

February 15th
The African-American Health Improvement Partnership, CAB met at Lyons Park in Durham at 5:30pm. Members representing the Community Health Coalition, Inc: Elaine Hart-Brothers, MD, MPH, FACP and Sharon Elliott-Bynum, PhD. Other representatives: Pamela Duncan, Sherman James, Lawrence Muhlbaler, Rupal Patel and Mina Silberberg.

February 16th
The African-American Health Improvement Partnership, Research Leadership Committee met with DIP participants for fun and Line Dancing at Holton Career Resource Center in the Dance Studio. Members representing the Community Health Coalition, Inc: Elaine Hart-Brothers, MD, MPH, FACP, and Sharon Elliott-Bynum, PhD. Other representatives: Pamela Duncan, Sherman James, Lawrence Muhlbaler, Rupal Patel, Andrea McMillon and Mina Silberberg.

February 19th
Moreene Road Community Housing Project Saturday Health Clinic was held. The Community Health Coalition, medical doctors and health professionals provided food, consultation and administered blood pressure, glucose and weight checks to residents from 9am to 2pm. Representing the Coalition were Cedric Bright, MD and Vivian Jackson, RN.

February 21st
CHC emailed and mailed via postal service approximately 300 Health Tips on Heart Health Awareness to churches, organizations, doctors and the media for distribution to congregation, members, patients and subscribers, respectively. The Health Tip was written by Kevin L. Thomas, MD and, an Assistant Professor of Medicine in the Division of Cardiovascular Disease at Duke University Medical Center, and edited & graphically designed by Carmelita Spicer, MEd. & Communications Specialist. Marion Miles, RN from the Coalition managed the Healthy Sunday program. Churches were encouraged to discuss on the 4th, Sunday.

February 22nd
Durham County Health Assessment Subcommittee Meeting was held. Cheryl Lloyd, PhD attended on behalf of the Community Health Coalition. Mel Downey-Piper convened a group of community organization representatives and health department staff to describe the timeline and committee work needed to implement a new community health assessment report. The team followed up on a previous discussion of the division of one section of the report into two. The previous outline combined health promotion and chronic disease. The two chapters have been divided into two separate sections. Cheryl Lloyd will participate in the committee on Heart Disease & Stroke and Spirituality.

February 23rd

February 25th
The 32nd Annual Minority Health Conference presented by the Minority Student Caucus, UNC Gillings School of Global Public Health was held from 8am to 4:30pm at the UNC William and Ida Friday Center for Continuing Education in Chapel Hill. The Conference theme was “The Promise of Health Equity: Advancing the Discussion to Eliminate Disparities in the 21st Century”. Dr. Bonnie M. Duran, Associate Professor at the University of Washington will give the Lecture. Cheryl Lloyd, PhD attended the conference on behalf of the Coalition.

February 26th
Morning Glory Community Housing Project Saturday Health Clinic was held. The Community Health Coalition, medical doctors and health professionals provided food, consultation and administered blood pressure, glucose and weight checks to residents from 9am to 2pm. Marion Miles, RN and others from the Coalition provided glucose screenings, blood pressure checks and encouraged attendees to sign up for FREE mammograms and a Diabetes Support Group (DIP) Research Project.

February 27th
The Community Health Coalition participated in a Health Fair at Antioch Baptist Church in Durham from 10am to 12noon. Marion Miles, RN and others from the Coalition provided glucose screenings, blood pressure checks and encouraged attendees to sign up for FREE mammograms and a Diabetes Support Group (DIP) Research Project.
