December 1st & 2nd
Members from the Community Health Coalition will attend a two day workshop for Certification on Chronic Disease and Diabetes Self-Management taught by a representative from Triangle J Area Agency on Aging at CAARE from 9am to 4pm. Members attending are Marion Flemmings, Carmelita Spicer, Janice Johnson, Pamela Bivens, Libby Johnson, Sonya Steele and Ross Matthews.

December 3rd
The Central Carolina Black Nurses Association will hold its 21st annual education lecture-luncheon from 11am to 1:30pm at the William Friday Center in Chapel Hill. Guest speaker will be Ernest Grant, MSN-RN, the current president of NC Nurses Association. He will be addressing the future of NC nursing. Attending on behalf of the Coalition will be Marion Miles, RN; Carmelita Spicer, MEd; Pamela Bivens, MS.

December 6th
The African-American Health Improvement Partnership, Research Leadership Committee will meet at NC Mutual in room 335 at 10:00 – 11:30am. Member representing the Community Health Coalition, Inc: Elaine Hart-Brothers, MD; Sharon Elliott-Bynum, PhD. Other representatives: Pamela Duncan, Sherman James, Lawrence Muhlbaler, Rupal Patel, Andrea McMillon and Mina Silberberg.

Blood Pressure Committee (B-PEP) will meet at 5:30pm at the Coalition to finalize the second 12 week blood pressure education program for HBP participants and review/understand current State of NC policy on insurance coverage for BP machines & cuffs. Members: Carmelita Spicer, MEd & Program Director; Bertha Williams, MSN & Program Instructor; Sherwood E. Smith, Insurance Agent; Yolanda Ford, Durham Public School Educator; James Amos, Communication Specialist from Duke; Naomi Little of Duke; Pamela Bivens, Contractor; and Elaine Hart-Brothers, MD and Cedric Bright, MD, advisors.

December 7th & 8th
Members from the Community Health Coalition will attend a two day workshop for Certification on Chronic Disease and Diabetes Self-Management taught by a representative from Triangle J Area Agency on Aging at CAARE from 9am to 4pm. December 9th
This 3 ½ hour short course, Investigator Responsibilities in Clinical Trials: Practical Applications of Good Clinical Practices, at UNC-Chapel Hill from 8:30am to 12 noon is targeted at principal investigators who are responsible for providing oversight and ensuring that Good Clinical Practices are followed in their research studies. Attendees will learn best practices for how to handle issues that arise in the daily conduct of research studies and how to handle these issues in compliance with GCP. This course is sponsored by The NC TraCS Institute, UNC Office of Clinical Trials, the UNC Center for Faculty Excellence, and the UNC Institutional Research Compliance Program. HIP (Healthy-in-Place) committee with meet with the Durham Partnership for Seniors at the 1st Presbyterian Church from 8:30 to 10:30am. An important goal is to find ways to foster greater coordination and collaboration between the Duke University Health System and the Durham community's network of service providers. Representing the Coalition will be Carmelita Spicer, MEd.

December 13th

December 15th & 16th

December 17th
Morreene Road Community Housing Project Saturday Health Clinic will be held. The Community Health Coalition, medical doctors and health professionals will provide food, consultation and administer blood pressure, glucose and weight checks to residents from 9am to 2pm. Representing the Coalition will be Cedric Bright, MD and Vivian Jackson, RN.

December 19th
CHC will email and mail via postal service approximately 300 Health Tips on Mental Health & Obesity in Our African American Youth to churches, organizations, doctors and the media for distribution to congregation, members, patients and subscribers, respectively. The Health Tip is written by Carmelita Spicer, MEd, in collaboration with Elaine Hart-Brothers, MD, MPH, FACP and Board President of the Community Health Coalition. The Health Tip is edited & graphically designed by Carmelita Spicer, MEd. Marion Miles, RN from the Coalition manages the Healthy Sunday program. Churches are encouraged to distribute the health tip to the congregation and discuss the health topic on the 4th, Sunday. Churches are also encouraged to upload the information to their website.

December 20th

Members representing the Community Health Coalition, Inc: Elaine Hart-Brothers, MD, MPH, FACP and Sharon Elliott-Bynum, PhD. Other representatives: Pamela Duncan, Sherman James, Lawrence Muhlbaler, Rupal Patel and Mina Silberberg.

December 24th
