October 4th
The African-American Health Improvement Partnership, Research Leadership Committee will meet at NC Mutual in room 335 at 10:00 – 11:30am. Member representing the Community Health Coalition, Inc: Elaine Hart-Brothers, MD; Sharon Elliott-Bynum, PhD. Other representatives: Pamela Duncan, Sherman James, Lawrence Muhlbaler, Rupal Patel, Andrea McMillon and Mina Silberberg.

Blood Pressure Committee (B-PEP) will meet at 5:30pm at the Coalition to re-commit to1) a second 12 week blood pressure education program for HBP participants 2) review commitment of leaders of Durham on managing their blood pressure and hypertension, and 3) review/understand current State of NC policy on insurance coverage for BP machines & cuffs. Members: Carmelita Spicer, MEd & Program Director; Bertha Williams, MSN & Program Instructor; Sherwood E. Smith, Insurance Agent; Yolanda Ford, Durham Public School Educator; Carolyn Clay, RN from Duke; James Amos, Communication Specialist from Duke; Gloria Chambers from NCCU; Naomi Little of Duke; Pamela Bivens, Contractor; and Elaine Hart-Brothers, MD and Cedric Bright, MD, advisors.

The LINKS health committee of the Durham Chapter will meet at the Community Health Coalition from 6:30 to 7:30pm to discuss health initiatives for the Durham community. Elaine Hart-Brothers, MD & Board President of the Coalition is chair of the Durham Chapter Links Health Committee.

October 7th
There will be a Living Longer, Living Stronger Breast Cancer Awareness Celebration from 9am to 12 noon at the Durham Center for Senior Life in Durham. For more information, contact Shannon DuPree at 919-707-5300.

October 9th
Bull City Open Streets invites the public to downtown Durham from 1 to 4pm to bike, walk, skate, dance and play. There will be a zone for kids, food, bikes and fitness.

October 10th
Eat Smart, Move More Seniors Exercise and Screening program will be held at CAARE through Project UPLIFT funding at the Durham Housing Authority Senior Living Centers. Representing the Coalition will be Sharon Elliott-Bynum, RN, PhD and Kay Sullivan and Telease Coleman.

October 11th
The Community Health Coalition will hold its First Annual Faith Summit for a Healthier Durham for local ministers at 9am at the Coalition office in Durham. The objective for this gathering is to promote health and wellness issues as priorities in church ministers. A full breakfast will be served. This event is planned and executed by the Community Health Coalition’s board members and chaired by board member, Attorney Tara Nichols.

October 13th
The Community Health Coalition will participate in a Live for Life health fair at Durham Regional Hospital from 10am to 3pm. Marion Miles, RN; Lois Parker; Contractor from the Coalition will provide blood pressure checks and encourage attendees to sign up for FREE mammograms and for a Diabetes Support Group (DIP) Research Project.

October 14th
Lincoln Community Health Center invites the public to a FREE breast health workshop and spa day from 9am to 2pm to learn about breast health, stress reduction, nutrition, exercise, symptom management and surviving breast cancer. There will be FREE facials, manicures, massages, breakfast and lunch.

October 15th
Morreene Road Community Housing Project Saturday Health Clinic will be held. The Community Health Coalition, medical doctors and health professionals will provide food, consultation and administer blood pressure, glucose and weight checks to residents from 9am to 2pm. Representing the Coalition will be Cedric Bright, MD and Vivian Jackson, RN.

The Community Health Coalition will participate in a Sisterhood Network social/health fair at Greater St. Paul Baptist Church from 8 to 10pm. Marion Miles, RN; Lois Parker; Contractor from the Coalition will provide blood pressure checks and encourage attendees to sign up for FREE mammograms and for a Diabetes Support Group (DIP) Research Project.

October 17th
CHC will email and mail via postal service approximately 300 Health Tips on Breast Cancer Awareness to churches, organizations, doctors and the media for distribution to congregation, members, patients and subscribers, respectively. The Health Tip is written by Carmelita Spicer, MEd, in collaboration with Stacey Heath, MD from the Harris & Smith OB/GYN practice in Durham. The Health Tip is edited & graphically designed by Carmelita Spicer, MEd. Marion Miles, RN from the Coalition manages the Healthy Sunday program. Churches are encouraged to distribute the health tip to the congregation and discuss the health topic on the 4th, Sunday. Churches are also encouraged to upload the information to their website.

October 18th
The African-American Health Improvement Partnership, CAB, will meet at Lyons Park in Durham at 5:30pm. Members representing the Community Health Coalition, Inc: Elaine Hart-Brothers, MD, MPH, FACP and Sharon Elliott-Bynum, PhD. Other representatives: Pamela Duncan, Sherman James, Lawrence Muhlbaler, Rupal Patel and Mina Silberberg.

The Community Health Coalition in partnership with Rex Hospital Mobile Mammography Unit is offering FREE mammograms at Walltown Park Recreation Center on Club Blvd. in Durham from 9am to 3pm to African American women, age 35+ who are underserved, uninsured and underinsured or who have a history of breast cancer in the family. Must call 919-470-8680 for an appointment.

October 20th
There will be a FREE health & wellness workshop for breast cancer patients & survivors at downtown YMCA in Durham from 6 to 8:30pm. Participants will receive tips & demonstrations for exercising, reducing stress and increasing positive emotions. Healthy snacks will be available. To enroll for this FREE workshop, call 919-962-1222.

October 22nd

The Community Health Coalition will participate in a Pink Health Sunday to promote breast health awareness and prevention at 1st First Calvary Baptist Church, Morehead Baptist Church, Ebenezer Baptist Church in Durham, and Siloam Baptist in Person County by providing health education packets to the congregations.

October 25th
