Community Health Coalition, Inc. in Partnership with Rex Hospital Mobile Mammography Unit
is offering FREE Mammograms in Phoenix Square Parking Area 800 Block on Fayetteville St. in Durham, NC from 9am – 3pm on Wednesday, March 2, 2011. The screenings will be offered to African American women; age 40+ who are underserved, uninsured and underinsured or who have a history of breast cancer in their family. Health related educational materials will also be distributed. Representing the Coalition will be Marion Miles, RN; Mary Pointer, RN; Janice Johnson, project coordinator; Lois Parker, lay health advisor.

Durham will observe the National Week of Prayer for the Healing of AIDS. Confidential HIV/AIDS testing will be available by the Durham Health Department. The events are free and open to the public. The Community Health Coalition in its efforts to promote physical activity and exercise will run in the Great Human 5K Race. The Run supports the Triangle non-profits. Representing the Coalition will be Jeremy Woods.

Eat Smart, Move More Seniors Exercise and Screening program will be held at CAARE through Project UPLIFT funding at the Durham Housing Authority Senior Living Centers. Representing the Coalition will be Sharon Elliott-Bynum, RN, PhD.

Blood Pressure Committee will meet on the B-PEP (Blood Pressure Education Program). The agenda for this meeting will be to work on 1) securing funding sources for hand held monitors, 2) developing a city-wide campaign to bring focus on managing high blood pressure and hypertension in the city of Durham, and 3) planning May’s Community Meeting and Health Fair. The American Cancer Society will hold a meeting at Durham Regional Hospital from 1 – 5pm to discuss the possibility of setting up an educational center on cancer awareness, prevention in the hospital. Representing the Coalition will be Marion Miles, RN.
March 15th
The Durham County Health Department will provide a session on Healthy Habits for Life: healthy weight training at 12noon. Bring your own. Participants will learn how to use BMI and receive tools and incentives for talking with women about weight. For more information, contact the Durham County Health Department.

Dr. Kathleen Thomas will speak on Navigating the System of Care: Parent Skills Associated with Child Mental Health as part of the spring 2011 ECHO Health Disparities Seminar series. The seminar will be held in room 101, Rosenau Hall, Gillings School of Global Public Health, UNC- Chapel Hill. Moreene Road Community Housing Project Saturday Health Clinic will be held. The Community Health Coalition, medical doctors and health professionals will provide food, consultation and administer blood pressure, glucose and weight checks to residents from 9am to 2pm. Representing the Coalition will be Cedric Bright, MD and Vivian Jackson, RN.
March 21st
CHC will email and mail via postal service approximately 300 Health Tips on Heart Health Awareness to churches, organizations, doctors and the media for distribution to congregation, members, patients and subscribers, respectively. The Health Tip is written by Edward Clemons, DDS, General Dentistry in Durham and, Veronica Ray, MD, Internal Medicine at Lincoln Community Health Center. The Health Tip is edited & graphically designed by Carmelita Spicer, MEd. & Communications Specialist. Marion Miles, RN from the Coalition manages the Healthy Sunday program. Churches are encouraged to discuss on the 4th, Sunday.
