July 5th
The African-American Health Improvement Partnership, Research Leadership Committee will meet at NC Mutual in room 335 at 12:30 – 2:00pm. Members representing the Community Health Coalition, Inc: Elaine Hart-Brothers, MD, MPH, FACP and Sharon Elliott-Bynum, PhD. Other representatives: Pamela Duncan, Sherman James, Lawrence Muhlbaler, Rupal Patel and Mina Silberberg.

July 7th - 28th
The Durham County Health Department is offering Be a Quitter Fresh Start classes for FREE on Thursday, July 7 – 28th from 5:30pm to 6:30pm. Classes are designed to help you quit smoking.

July 8th
Meeting of the HIP Seniors Leadership Team and several strategic partners (as part of Durham Health Innovators [DHI]) will hold a 2-hour meeting from 11am to 1pm at Duke’s School of Nursing. The meeting agenda is to focus on (1) an update of what has been happening on the seniors health issues scene at Duke and in Durham County in the last year; (2) a summary of ongoing efforts within the HIP Seniors Team, and (3) a prioritization of where to go from here. Representing the Coalition will be Carmelita Spicer, MEd and Chair of the Social Marketing Committee of HIP Seniors.

July 12th
Eat Smart, Move More Seniors Exercise and Screening program will be held at CAARE through Project UPLIFT funding at the Durham Housing Authority Senior Living Centers. Representing the Coalition will be Sharon Elliott-Bynum, RN, PhD and Kay Sullivan and Telease Coleman.

July 13th
Partnership for a Healthy Durham will meet from 3:00 to 4:30pm at the main library on the first floor. The Partnership for a Healthy Durham is currently writing the Community Health Assessment which will be completed by December. Meeting will be held to discuss & select new health priorities which will become the Partnership’s committees for 2012-2014. This is the first of seven community meetings that will occur in August and September to help determine our new health priorities. Representing the Coalition will be Cheryl Lloyd, PhD; Sharon Baker, JD and Carmelita Spicer, MEd.

July 16th
The Community Health Coalition will participate in a Health Fair from 10 am to 4pm at the Hilton in RTP. Health Fair is sponsored by Amanda Mandy for her company and employees. The Coalition will be distributing health education materials, signing-up women for FREE mammograms and for the diabetes II program (DIP) and administering blood pressure checks. Representing the Coalition at the health fair will be Marion Miles, RN; Lois Parker, Community Outreach Worker.

July 18th
CHC will email and mail via postal service approximately 300 Health Tips on HIV/AIDS Awareness and Prevention to churches, organizations, doctors and the media for distribution to congregation, members, patients and subscribers, respectively. The Health Tip is written by Tamera Coyne-Beasley, MD. The Health Tip is edited & graphically designed by Carmelita Spicer, MEd. & Communications Specialist. Marion Miles, RN from the Coalition manages the Healthy Sunday program. Churches are encouraged to distribute the health tip to the congregation and discuss the health topic on the 4th, Sunday. Churches are also encouraged to upload the information to their website.

July 19th
Elaine Hart-Brothers, MD and Carmelita Spicer, MEd of the Community Health Coalition will meet with Sue Schneider, Program Manager of Durham Health Innovations Program (made possible from planning grants by Duke Health Systems) and Brenda Jamerson, PharmD from Campbell University at 11:30am at the Coalition office to discuss CHC’s continued involvement in the grant programs. Specifically discussion will evolve around the four (4) of the ten (10) planning grants that the Community Health Coalition worked on in 2009/10: Cardiovascular Improvement Project (VIP); Seniors Healthy-in-Place (HIP); Obesity; and Maternal Child Care.

Members representing the Community Health Coalition, Inc: Elaine Hart-Brothers, MD, MPH, FACP and Sharon Elliott-Bynum, PhD. Other representatives: Pamela Duncan, Sherman James, Lawrence Muhlbaler, Rupal Patel and Mina Silberberg.

July 23rd
