February 1st

The Childhood Obesity Program funded by the LINKS, Inc., Durham Chapter will meet with approximately 20 middle school students at the Coalition from 4:00 to 7:00pm. The program is designed to encourage the students to eat healthy and exercise. Children come from neighborhood churches and “Find a Kid “program under the auspices of Coach Spence. Representing the coalition are Sharon Baker, JD and director; Sonia Steele, Registered Dietician and Instructor; Ross Brothers and Coach Spence, Facilitators.

February 2nd
The African-American Health Improvement Partnership, Research Leadership Committee will meet at NC Mutual in room 335 at 12:30 – 2:00pm. Members representing the Community Health Coalition, Inc: Elaine Hart-Brothers, MD, MPH, FACP and Sharon Elliott-Bynum, PhD. Other representatives: Pamela Duncan, Sherman James, Lawrence Muhlbaler, Rupal Patel and Mina Silberberg.

February 3rd
The LINKS Health Committee of the Durham Chapter will meet to discuss the health agenda for the 2011 year. Attending on behalf of the Coalition was Elaine Hart-Brothers, MD. Others attending will be Avis Artis, MD; Sandra Olden; Linda Burton; Tiffany Williams, Jasmine Smith.

February 3rd – April 21st
National Alliance of Mental Illness (NAMI) will hold a series of 12 weekly classes to help family members understand and support their ill relatives while maintaining their won well being. The Family-to-Family Education Program is FREE to participants. The Chapel Hill class starts February 3, 2011 and runs to April 21, 2011 from 6:30 to 9:00pm. February 8th
Eat Smart, Move More Seniors Exercise and Screening program will be held at CAARE through Project UPLIFT funding at the Durham Housing Authority Senior Living Centers. Representing the Coalition will be Sharon Elliott-Bynum, RN, PhD.

February 9th

North Carolina Harm Reduction Coalition (NCHRC) will present An Overview of Harm Reduction, Drug Use, Sex, Work and Advocacy in North Carolina from 6:30 to 8:30pm at 1005 Slater Road, Suite 330 in Durham. Free dinner will be served. RSVP to molly@nchrc.net. For more information call 336-543-8050.

February 16th
The African-American Health Improvement Partnership, Research Leadership Committee will meet with DIP participants for fun and Line Dancing at Holton Career Resource Center in the Dance Studio. Members representing the Community Health Coalition, Inc: Elaine Hart-Brothers, MD, MPH, FACP, Carmelita Spicer, MEd, and Sharon Elliott-Bynum, PhD. February 18th
Seminar on Dimensions of Black Masculinity: Scale Development Using Mixed Methods across Multiple Projects will be present by Dr. Bob Aronson from 1:00 to 2:15pm at Rosenau Hall, Gillings School of Global Public Health in Chapel Hill.

February 19th
Moreene Road Community Housing Project Saturday Health Clinic will be held. The Community Health Coalition, medical doctors and health professionals will provide food, consultation and administer blood pressure, glucose and weight checks to residents from 9am to 2pm. Representing the Coalition will be Cedric Bright, MD and Vivian Jackson, RN.

February 21st
CHC will email and mail via postal service approximately 300 Health Tips on Heart Health Awareness to churches, organizations, doctors and the media for distribution to congregation, members, patients and subscribers, respectively. The Health Tip was written by Kevin L. Thomas, MD and, an Assistant Professor of Medicine in the Division of Cardiovascular Disease at Duke University Medical Center, and edited & graphically designed by Carmelita Spicer, MEd. & Communications Specialist. Marion Miles, RN from the Coalition manages the Healthy Sunday program. Churches are encouraged to discuss on the 4th, Sunday.

February 23rd

February 25th
The 32nd Annual Minority Health Conference presented by the Minority Student Caucus, UNC Gillings School of Global Public Health will be held from 8am to 4:30pm at the UNC William and Ida Friday Center for Continuing Education in Chapel Hill. The Conference theme is “The Promise of Health Equity: Advancing the Discussion to Eliminate Disparities in the 21st Century”. Dr. Bonnie M. February 26th
Morning Glory Community Housing Project Saturday Health Clinic will be held. The Community Health Coalition, medical doctors and health professionals will provide food, consultation and administer blood pressure, glucose and weight checks to residents from 9am to 2pm. Representing the Coalition will be Cedric Bright, MD and Vivian Jackson, RN.

There will be a FREE Wellness Workshop for breast cancer survivors and co-survivors from 6 – 9pm at Healing with CAARE on Broadway in Durham. Those attending will receive a pedometer, an exercise band and healthy recipes. Pre-registration is required. Call 919-962-1222

“Your Heart, Your Health: A Red Dress Celebration will be held from 8am to 3pm at Brier Creek Country Club in Raleigh. Women are invited to learn about the risk factors, warning signs. There will be speakers, a health fair, health screenings and a heart-healthy lunch. The cost is $25. For details and registration call 388-ASK-DUKE or visit www.dukehealth.org
