FEBRUARY 2012 CALENDAR
February 1st
The African-American Health Improvement Partnership, Research Leadership Committee will meet at NC Mutual in room 335 at 12:30 – 2pm. Members representing the Community Health Coalition, Inc: Elaine Hart-Brothers, MD, MPH, FACP and Sharon Elliott-Bynum, PhD. Other representatives: Pamela Duncan, Sherman James, Lawrence Muhlbaler, Rupal Patel and Mina Silberberg.

February 7th
The Community Health Coalition will participate in a health workshop/event at WD Hill Community Center from 6:00pm to 7:00pm. Marion Miles, RN; Lois Parker; Contractor from the Coalition will provide blood pressure checks and encourage parents to sign up for FREE mammograms. Marion Miles will also provide educational materials on proper nutrition, obesity concerns and diabetes.

February 8th

.February 13th
CHC will email and mail via postal service approximately 350 Health Tips on Heart Health Awareness to churches, organizations, doctors and the media for distribution to congregation, members, patients and subscribers, respectively. The Health Tip is written by Carmelita Spicer in collaboration with Kevin L. Thomas, MD, F.A.C.C., Assistant Professor of Medicine in the Division of Cardiovascular Disease at Duke University Medical Center. It is edited & graphically designed by Carmelita Spicer, MEd. Marion Miles, RN from the Coalition manages the Healthy Sunday program. Churches are encouraged to discuss on the 4th Sunday.

February 14th
Blood Pressure Committee (B-PEP) will meet at 5:30pm at the Coalition to finalize the second 12 week blood pressure education program for HBP participants and review/understand current State of NC policy on insurance coverage for BP machines & cuffs. Members: Carmelita Spicer, MEd & Program Director; Bertha Williams, MSN & Program Instructor; Sherwood E. Smith, Insurance Agent; Yolanda Ford, Durham Public School Educator; Carolyn Clay, RN from Duke; James Amos, Communication Specialist from Duke; Naomi Little of Duke; Pamela Bivens, Contractor; and Elaine Hart-Brothers, MD and Cedric Bright, MD, advisors.

Moreene Road Community Housing Project Saturday Health Clinic will be held. The Community Health Coalition, medical doctors and health professionals will provide food, consultation and administer blood pressure, glucose and weight checks to residents from 9am to 2pm. Representing the Coalition will be Cedric Bright, MD and Vivian Jackson, RN.

February 21st
The Community Health Coalition will participate in a health workshop/event at WD Hill Community Center from 6:00pm to 7:00pm. Other representatives: Pamela Duncan, Sherman James, Lawrence Muhlbaler, Rupal Patel and Mina Silberberg.The Black Caucus of National Council of Teachers of English, (NCTE) is sponsoring the 23rd African American Read-In on Tuesday, February 21, 2012 from 9:00am to 12:00 noon at Shepard IB Middle School in Durham, NC. The goal is to make literacy an integral part of Black History Month. Elaine Hart-Brothers, MD and President of Board of the Coalition has been invited to speak to the classes about her favorite African American book, story and discuss her career.

February 25th
