AUGUST 2011 ACTIVITY SUMMARIES

August 2nd
The African-American Health Improvement Partnership, Research Leadership Committee met at NC Mutual in room 335 at 12:30 – 2:00pm. Member representing the Community Health Coalition, Inc: Sharon Elliott-Bynum, PhD. Other representatives: Pamela Duncan, Sherman James, Lawrence Muhlbaler, Rupal Patel and Mina Silberberg.

August 4th
American Cancer Society held its kick-off breakfast for Making Strides Against Breast Cancer at the Sheraton Imperial. Representing the Coalition was Marion Miles, RN.

August 8th
Eat Smart, Move More Seniors Exercise and Screening program was held at CAARE through Project UPLIFT funding at the Durham Housing Authority Senior Living Centers. Representing the Coalition were Sharon Elliott-Bynum, RN, PhD and Kay Sullivan and Telease Coleman..

August 9th
The African-American Health Improvement Partnership, Research Leadership Committee met at NC Mutual in room 335 at 10:00 – 11:30am. Members representing the Community Health Coalition, Inc: Sharon Elliott-Bynum, PhD; Elaine Hart-Brothers, MD. Other representatives: Pamela Duncan, Sherman James, Lawrence Muhlbaler, Rupal Patel, Andrea McMillon and Mina Silberberg.

August 16th
The African-American Health Improvement Partnership, CAB, met at NC Mutual Bldg. in Durham at 5:30pm. Member representing the Community Health Coalition, Inc: Sharon Elliott-Bynum, PhD. Other representatives: Pamela Duncan, Sherman James, Lawrence Muhlbaler, Rupal Patel and Mina Silberberg.

August 18th
CHC emailed and mailed via postal service approximately 300 Health Tips on Infant Health and Pregnancy to churches, organizations, doctors and the media for distribution to congregation, members, patients and subscribers, respectively. The Health Tip was written by Maria Small, MD. The Health Tip was edited & graphically designed by Carmelita Spicer, MEd. & Communications Specialist. Marion Miles, RN from the Coalition manages the Healthy Sunday program. Churches are encouraged to distribute the health tip to the congregation and discuss the health topic on the 4th, Sunday. Churches are also encouraged to upload the information to their website.

August 20th
The Auxiliary to the Durham Academy of Medicine, Dentistry and Pharmacy held its 18th Annual Legacy Luncheon at 12 noon at the Hilton Durham Hotel. Featured speaker was Cedric M. Bright, MD, the 112th President, National Medical Association. Honors were given to Sharon Elliott-Bynum, PhD and Joyce Clayton Nichols, PA. Partial proceeds benefitted the Community Health Coalition for its work in Healthy People 2020 and CAARE for its FREE clinic and community outreach efforts. Representing the Coalition were Elaine Hart-Brothers, MD; Sharon Baker, JD; Carmelita Spicer, MEd; Marion Miles, RN; Lois Parker. There were two vendors participating as the request of the Coalition. They were: Wendell Camp of Amedisys Home Health Care; Harriett E. Ecclesine of Lilly USA.

A Community Health Fair was held at CAARE and sponsored by the North Carolina Leadership Conference, Inc. in partnership with CAARE, Inc., and the Durham Committee on the Affairs of Black People and the Community Health Coalition. The Coalition also participated in the Health Fair by distributing health education materials, signing-up women for FREE mammograms and for the diabetes II program (DIP) and administering blood pressure checks. Representing the Coalition at the health fair were be Marion Miles, RN; Lois Parker, Community Outreach Worker; Sonia Steele, Volunteer.

August 21st
The Coalition participated in a Health Fair at the Full Gospel Deliverance Church from 1 to 4pm. At the fair, the Coalition distributed health education materials, signed-up women for FREE mammograms and for the diabetes II program (DIP) and administered blood pressure checks. Representing the Coalition at the health fair were be Marion Miles, RN; Lois Parker, Community Outreach Worker; Sonia Steele, Volunteer.

August 23rd

The National Alliance on Mental Illness (NAMI) held a family-to-family FREE education program at Westminster Presbyterian Church at 3639 Old Chapel Hill Road in Durham from 7 – 9:30pm.

August 31st
