Members representing the Community Health Coalition, Inc: Elaine Hart-Brothers, MD, MPH, FACP and Sharon Elliott-Bynum, PhD. Other representatives: Pamela Duncan, Sherman James, Lawrence Muhlbaler, Rupal Patel and Mina Silberberg.
April 9th
The LINKS, Inc. Durham Chapter hosted an afternoon of “Networking with Notables: Past, Present and Future” from 4 – 6pm at the Alfonso Elder Student Union, NCCU. Notables were Judge Elaine Bushfan; The Honorable HM Mickey Michaux, Jr.; Elaine Hart-Brothers, MD; Broadway Performing Artist, Claire Bathe’ Williams; The Bull City Slam Team; Blues and Folk Musician, Jasme’ Kelly. Proceeds of this event supported the Chapter’s Endowed Scholarship Fund at NCCU. The public is invited to attend.
The Community Health Coalition participated in a Health Fair at Oak Grove Baptist Church in Durham from 11am to 4pm. Marion Miles, RN and others from the Coalition provided glucose screenings, blood pressure checks and encouraged attendees to sign up for FREE mammograms and a Diabetes Support Group (DIP) Research Project.
April 9th – 10th
Duke University and Durham County in partnership with the American Cancer Society hosted its 2011 Relay for Life at Duke University Campus Main Quad. Working on the planning committee from the Coalition was Marion Miles, RN.
April 11th
Community Health Coalition, Inc. in Partnership with Rex Hospital Mobile Mammography Unit
offered FREE Mammograms at Union Baptist Church in Durham on April 11, 2011 from 10am to 3pm. The screenings were offered to African American women; age 40+ who are underserved, uninsured and underinsured or who have a history of breast cancer in their family. Health related educational materials were also distributed. Representing the Coalition were Marion Miles, RN; Janice Johnson, project coordinator; Lois Parker, lay health advisor.
April 12th
Eat Smart, Move More Seniors Exercise and Screening program was held at CAARE through Project UPLIFT funding at the Durham Housing Authority Senior Living Centers. Representing the Coalition were Sharon Elliott-Bynum, RN, PhD and Kay Sullivan.

Blood Pressure Committee met on the B-PEP (Blood Pressure Education Program). The agenda for this meeting was to work on planning May’s Community Meeting and Health Fair. Active committee members: Carmelita Spicer, MEd & Program Director; Rick Gray, Clinical Research Associate with Duke & Committee Facilitator; Sherwood E. Smith, Insurance Agent; Yolanda Ford, Durham Public School Educator; James Amos, CHC Board Member & Program Coordinator; Bertha Williams, MSN; Elaine Hart-Brothers, MD and advisor.
Duke University Health System hosted its 10th Durham Health Summit at the Washington Duke Inn in Durham from 8:30am to 2:30 pm. Topics included: Healthcare Reform and Finance; CEO Roundtable of Workplace Wellness Models; Integrating Health, Wellness and Spirituality; Taking Personal Responsibility for Your Health. Attending this event from the Coalition was Marion Miles, RN.
April 16th
Moreene Road Community Housing Project Saturday Health Clinic was held. The Community Health Coalition, medical doctors and health professionals provided food, consultation and administer blood pressure, glucose and weight checks to residents from 9am to 2pm. Representing the Coalition were Cedric Bright, MD and Vivian Jackson, RN.
The Academic Community Service Learning Program of North Carolina Central University held its First Lady Walk-a-thon and “Eat Smart, Be Active”, Bridging the Gap to eliminate Health Disparities Workshop/Health Fair from 8:30am to 12noon. Participating in the workshop
were Cheryl Lloyd, PhD and Marion Miles, RN.
April 18th
CHC emailed and mailed via postal service approximately 300 Health Tips on Healthy People 2020 – Reducing Health Disparities to churches, organizations, doctors and the media for distribution to congregation, members, patients and subscribers, respectively. The Health Tip was written by Elaine Hart Brothers, MD, Internal Medicine at Metropolitan Durham Medical Group and Board President of the Community Health Coalition, Inc... The Health Tip was edited & graphically designed by Carmelita Spicer, MEd. & Communications Specialist. Marion Miles, RN from the Coalition managed the Healthy Sunday program. Churches were encouraged to discuss on the 4th, Sunday.

The Durham County Health Assessment Team met from 3 – 4:30pm at the Durham County Health Department to research and write Durham’s Community Health Assessment for 2012. The team consisted of representatives from the community. Member of the team from the Coalition attending the meeting was Cheryl Lloyd, PhD.

The Community Health Coalition participated in the March of Dimes Annual 3K Walk at Imperial Park in Durham. Registration started at 8:30am. The event is co-chaired by Marie Small, MD and a supporter to the Community Health Coalition. Walkers representing the Coalition were Pamela Bivens, volunteer, Lottie Barnes, volunteer and Wendy Bivens, volunteer.
